The Classroom
Grade 3
Hearing Impairments
The 3rd grade program is about deafness and hearing impairments. The students learn how people hear, why some people hear differently than others, and how to communicate with people who can’t hear at all. In the first session, the activities focus on giving the students a better understanding of what it is like to be hearing impaired. They also try to speech read and finger spell. In session two, the students experience different assistive devices, such as hearing aids and FM systems that can be used to enhance hearing, and different methods of communication that someone who is hearing impaired can use. The students then play a game of “go fish”, using only sign language.
