The Classroom
Grade 5
Physical Impairments
The 5th grade program focuses on physical disabilities. It begins with a discussion of terms such as paralysis, stroke, physical therapy and our perceptions of what these terms mean. Session 1 activities simulate fine motor skill loss and include dressing and writing stations, as well as a communication board activity. Session 2 explores gross motor skill loss with students experiencing assistive mobility devices such as wheelchairs and walkers. Simulations of spine and head injuries that result in paralysis, sensory loss, and cognitive issues are discussed, as well as therapeutic techniques to improve strength and balance. The unit concludes with a discussion on safety and prevention. The goal of the unit is for the students to experience the reality of a physical limitation, to learn how to avoid injury, and to challenge our perceptions of what people with a physical limitation can and can not accomplish.
